he overall aim of the project is to share best practice between partners, identifying and implementing appropriate standardisation measures to increase passenger numbers in a sustainable way across the Atlantic Area.

In line with other Atlantic Area funded projects, partners will be able to claim back 65% of expenditure for work completed as part of AFLOAT. HITRANS share of the budget that has been submitted in the funding application stands at €981,487.

AFLOAT aims to:

  • Introduce smart ticketing for ferries, integrated with other transport modes.
  • Integration of ferry services with local bus, rail, air and road networks through provision of more appropriate services and facilities;
  • Improve the marketing of ferry services to local travellers and tourists.
  • Improve use of sustainable energy sources within ferry operations.
  • Develop new and modified ferry routes and networks to improve regional accessibility.
  • Establish a knowledge sharing network of ferry operations within the Atlantic Area region.

If AFLOAT is approved by the Atlantic Area Managing Authority the project will run from January 2012 to September 2014 (32 months)
