Traveline Scotland Windows Smart Phone App Launched
The free Traveline Scotland mobile phone app, jointly funded by SPT and HITRANS, is now available on Windows Phone devices.
The app provides public transport information and can already be downloaded to iPhone, Android and Blackberry handsets.
A new and improved version for Windows Phone users means the app is now available to around 95 per cent of the UK’s smart phone owners.
SPT Chief Executive Gordon Maclennan said: “SPT is embracing new technology and this mobile phone app is a great way to promote public transport information to customers.
“By working in partnership with HITRANS, and with financial support from the European funded START project, SPT is providing customers with easy access to transport information from their smart phones.
“I am delighted that the app is easy to download and is available to nearly every smart phone user in the country.”
HITRANS Partnership Manager Ranald Robertson added: “HITRANS is delighted to have put the European funding we secured through the START project to good use. The work we have delivered in partnership with SPT and Traveline Scotland in developing smart phone apps shows that public transport information really does keep pace with new technologies. The Traveline Scotland apps are all free to download and very easy to use and in the Highlands and Islands a large number of buses are fitted with trackers that allow passengers to receive real time information through the apps.”
The Traveline app was originally launched on iPhone in November 2010 with Android and Blackberry apps introduced in 2011. To date there have already been nearly 150,000 downloads.
The three original apps are rated ‘4-star’ on the iTunes, Blackberry and Android markets and it is hoped this success will continue with the Windows Phone.
Functions on the app include allowing users to access departure boards for all 370,000 bus stops in Britain, Glasgow Subway departures and the timetables for all Scottish ferry services.
The Windows Phone app also features many new functions that don’t yet appear across the other platforms.
These include an intuitive journey planner specially designed for smart phones, a full map display of journeys and user selectable background colours.
These innovations are currently being developed by Traveline Scotland for the other app platforms.
